Supporting men’s health and wellbeing – International Men’s Day
Today on International Men’s Day (19 November), we take a moment to celebrate the positive contributions men make to CFA, our communities, families and workplaces – and to reflect on the challenges some continue to face.
The theme for International Men’s Day 2025, Supporting Men and Boys, encourages us to champion those making a difference and to personally support the men and boys in our lives. It’s a day to promote men’s health, highlight positive role models, and encourage conversations around gender equality and wellbeing.
At CFA, we recognise and appreciate the dedication of all who serve - as volunteers, employees, leaders, mentors and caregivers. Your courage, compassion and commitment to protecting lives and property are deeply valued.
We also acknowledge the personal sacrifices that come with emergency service work, and the physical and emotional toll it can take.
International Men’s Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about men’s mental health and wellbeing. Across Australia, men remain overrepresented in suicide statistics – a tragic reality that is even more pronounced among those working and volunteering in emergency services.
In 2023, 2,419 men died by suicide in Australia, with the highest rates among those aged 30-44. These figures highlight the urgent need to create supportive environments and encourage help-seeking.
The pressures of the job, exposure to potentially traumatic events and societal expectations about what it means to stay strong can make it difficult to speak up. Seeking support is a sign of strength – not weakness.
At CFA, we are committed to building a culture where everyone feels safe, respected and supported to thrive.
International Men’s Day is for everyone. People of all genders can take part in supporting positive masculinity and equality. I encourage you to take a moment today to:
- Start a conversation about mental health
- Say thank you to the men who make a difference every day
If you need support, remember our Wellbeing Support Line is available free of charge whenever you need it. Let’s continue to build a CFA where everyone – regardless of gender – feels valued, respected and empowered to contribute.
Thank you to all the men across CFA for your service, leadership and example. Your impact is felt every day, and today we honour you.
