Women from CFA’s North East Region participated in their Women’s Challenge Camp at Ovens Valley Homestead last weekend to kick off the first of five camps that will happen around the state in 2026.

Women’s Challenge Camps are one of the development opportunities available under CFA’s Volunteer Leadership Development (VLD) Program. They provide a safe and supportive space for women to develop leadership skills, build networks outside their own brigades, and take on more active roles within CFA.

Participant and Alexandra Fire Brigade Member Christina Irvine said the camp provided a platform for her to build on the relationships formed over the weekend.

“It’s building that framework for us to just support each other, help each other and nurture us moving forward,” Christina said.

Buxton Fire Brigade Member Stacey Mallett revelled in the opportunity to step outside her comfort zone.

“It gave me confidence in myself again, something that I haven’t had in a long time, and it showed me that I can take chances, because I can fall and it’s not the end of the world,” Stacey said.

About Women’s Challenge Camps

Initiated by CFA’s South East Region in 2018, the camps expanded statewide to all five of CFA’s regions in 2025. By equipping women with the necessary skills and networks, the camps have proven to be valuable in improving female participation and retention. The expansion ensures that even more women have access to the opportunities the camps provide.

South West Region:    22-24 May, Princetown
