New technologies helping farmers prevent haystack fires

Haystack fires remain a serious risk for farmers, with CFA attending an estimated 150 haystack fires every year.

 

One of the main causes of haystack fires is when hay containing too much moisture spontaneously combusts. Buloke West Group Officer and Jeffcott member David Manifold is one farmer who has been quick to adopt new technologies and improved practices in the haymaking process to reduce that danger.

“Over the last few years, we’ve worked out new techniques of production, from essentially fungicidal treatments of cropping, right through to new techniques of how we make it,” David said.

“Not only are we making better hay, we’re actually making it in a shorter window than we used to.”
