Navigating the Pines
On Sunday 24 November 24, CFA members gathered for a group training exercise hosted by the Moyhu Group and Hancock Victorian Plantations (HVP.)
This action-packed day provided participants with the chance to connect and learn as well as develop critical firefighting skills.
The exercise, led by the Moyhu Group DGO and Training Coordinator Rolly Matheson, included hands-on drills such as stream-side drafting, collar tank operations, chainsaw use, and asbestos awareness.
Participants navigated steep terrain, tackled safety challenges like hazardous trees and burnovers, and even practised working around aircraft—all while being mentored by experienced leaders.
This exercise would not have happened without the support of the Group Management Team members who were instructors on the day, as well as assistance from HPV Northern District Fire Protection Manager, Nikki Armstrong.
District 23 and District 22 Women’s Network Groups were delighted to join the event, with Devenish Lieutenant Jess Pianta describing the day as a fantastic opportunity to build on existing skills and learn new ones.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the day—whether by sharing their knowledge and teaching others or actively participating in the activities. Your dedication and enthusiasm made the exercise a fabulous event.
With safety, skill development and diversity as key objectives, the day’s success showcased the power of teamwork and dedication, making it a true celebration of CFA values.
