In late August, VEMTC Wangaratta came alive with energy, teamwork, and skill-building as 28 CFA Volunteers gathered for a Hot Fire Training Day.
Organised through the District 22 and District 23 Women’s Networking Group, the event was designed to provide hands-on experience in firefighting, breathing apparatus (BA) use, and incident response scenarios.
Led by a team of four experienced PAD instructors, the day offered a supportive and inclusive learning environment. The instructors’ combined experience and encouragement helped participants feel confident to challenge themselves and grow their skills.
A wide range of activities kept participants engaged throughout the day. Volunteers had the opportunity to experience BA use in realistic conditions. Non-qualified members were supported as they donned BA gear and entered a building scenario for the first time, while qualified members practiced and refined their techniques under expert guidance.
Firefighting simulations challenged teams to respond to various scenarios, strengthening their tactical decision-making and teamwork. One particularly exciting opportunity allowed participants to get behind the wheel of a fire truck under the supervision of a driver trainer, building confidence and familiarity with operational vehicles.
Later in the day, volunteers participated in a simulated major incident exercise on the training pad. This scenario tested their communication, coordination, and leadership skills in a high-pressure environment, reinforcing the importance of teamwork in complex situation.
The training day not only provided participants with valuable hands on experience, but it also gave them an opportunity to connect with volunteers from different brigades and share experiences.
As CFA continues to build pathways for all members to grow and thrive, events like this showcase the strength of our volunteer network and the value of creating spaces where everyone feels encouraged to step up, try something new, and support one another.
