Thirty-eight newly qualified peers have joined CFA’s Peer Support Program, adding to a statewide network that has supported members and their families for more than 40 years.

The new graduates were formally welcomed at a special graduation ceremony held at Melbourne Zoo on 15 August.

They join a well-established and respected team of peers who provide a trusted first point of contact and help connect individuals with further wellbeing support when needed.

Running since 1985, the program has supported members through some of CFA’s most challenging events including the 2009 fires, 2019-20 fires, 2022 floods, 2025-26 fires and interstate deployments.

Peers give their time to support fellow members and their immediate families following difficult or potentially traumatic life events, whether personal or connected to their CFA service.

Their role is to listen, reflect and offer options for the person to consider how they would like to approach dealing with a particular concern. This can also include helping someone connect with other relevant wellbeing services.

Prior to becoming qualified, members complete extensive training in foundation skills and psychological first aid, supported by the Organisational Wellbeing Team and experienced members of the Peer Support Team. The training includes several scenario-based role plays and case studies.

A further 30 peers are currently completing their training and are expected to join the program later in 2026.

 Sanjeev Choudhary

General Manager Health, Safety and Wellbeing Sanjeev Choudhary formally welcomed the graduates and thanked them for their commitment to supporting others.

“Today is about recognising a group of people who have chosen to put service to others at the centre of their contribution to CFA,” Sanjeev said.

“Through your willingness to support others during difficult times, you are demonstrating one of the most meaningful forms of leadership and service there is.

“I have often heard members reflect on difficult periods in their lives and careers. Rarely do they remember a process or procedure. They remember the person who checked in, listened without judgement and genuinely cared.

“Sometimes a single conversation can change the trajectory of someone’s day, their recovery or even their willingness to seek further support.

“We are proud to welcome our new peers to the team and look forward to the positive impact they will have on our members, their families and CFA for many years to come.”

CFA members and their immediate families can access the Peer Support Program through the Wellbeing Support Line on 1800 959 232, selecting option ‘2’ and then selecting the relevant peer team.
