Australian Fire Service Medal nominations now open
CFA members across Victoria are encouraged to help recognise the outstanding people in their ranks, with nominations open for the 2027 King's Birthday Honours.
If you know someone whose dedication deserves national recognition, now is the time to nominate them for the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM).
The AFSM is Australia's highest honour for fire service personnel. It recognises distinguished service, leadership and commitment – often built over decades of service to communities.
Four CFA members recently received the medal for their exceptional contributions. Now it's time to consider who could be next.
The award recognises more than frontline firefighting. It also celebrates those who lead operations, mentor others, strengthen their brigades and make a lasting impact on CFA and the communities they serve.
A recent recipient of the AFSM, Chief Officer Jason Heffernan AFSM said nominating someone is a meaningful way to acknowledge the difference members have made.
"This is more than an award; it's an opportunity to tell someone their contribution hasn't gone unnoticed,” Jason said.
"To receive an AFSM is incredibly humbling. We know our people don't seek the spotlight – but nominating them can be a powerful moment for them, their brigade and their community.
“Every CFA member knows someone whose commitment has made a lasting difference.
“If someone comes to mind, consider putting their name forward for an Australian Fire Service Medal nomination.”
Members may be considered for an AFSM if they:
- are current serving members (within two years) who work on the frontline with prolonged exposure to hazard
- use their frontline knowledge and experience to train or educate others
- have made a significant, distinguished or outstanding contribution to CFA and the broader community.
Nominations close 1 November 2026.
CFA staff eligible to receive Public Service Medal (PSM)
The Public Service Medal is part of the Australian Honours and Awards system and acknowledges public sector employees who demonstrate excellence, leadership and innovation.
Outstanding service could be shown through:
- service excellence to the public, or to external or internal clients
