Asset Protection Unit

APU-header-main

Asset Protection Unit (APU) is a mobile sprinkler based protection system to safeguard towns, buildings and environmentally sensitive areas during both planned burns and active bushfires. The APU is supported by personnel from the Planned Burn Taskforce (PBTF) a state based volunteer group trained and equipped to assist with planned burning and emergency response across Victoria.

How Asset Protection Unit Works

APU-house-sprinklerThe APU is a portable sprinkler system designed to create a protective wet buffer around assets exposed to fire. Developed for planned burning operations that is suitable for real‑time bushfire protection. The system is set up around the perimeter of the area or asset requiring protection. Once activated the sprinklers saturate vegetation, ground fuels and structures creating a moisture barrier that reduces fire intensity, slows fire spread and helps prevent ember ignition. The current configuration allows for up to seventy sprinklers connected by kilometres of hose, forming a continuous wet control line. It can operate independently of town water supplies by drawing water from rivers, creeks, natural water sources or by using pumps and collar tanks. This independence makes the APU particularly valuable in remote communities or locations with limited water infrastructure.

Deployment begins with identifying assets requiring protection and selecting an appropriate water source. Crews then lay out hose networks around the perimeter and position sprinklers to achieve optimal coverage. Once connected and pressurised, the system is activated to establish a sustained wet buffer. Throughout the operation, crews monitor the system and adjust sprinkler placement or water flow as conditions change.

The Asset Protection Unit is a vital tool in CFA’s fire management capability. Supported by the Planned Burn Taskforce, it strengthens Victoria’s ability to conduct planned burns safely and respond effectively to major bushfire threats. Its mobility, versatility, and protective capacity make it an essential asset for safeguarding communities and the environment.
