New emergency feminine hygiene packs

In a significant move to support women members, CFA has introduced emergency feminine hygiene packs for all CFA vehicles.

This initiative, mandated by the Chief Officer, ensures that women have access to essential menstrual items when they are at incidents or in remote locations where these supplies may not be readily available.

Each pack includes a selection of sanitary pads and tampons, designed to cater to various needs and preferences. The items are stored in a water-resistant zip lock bag to keep them protected and ready for use.

Maddisen Brown, CFA’s Supply Manager, who spearheads this initiative explained.

“This new approach consolidates these items into comprehensive packs that prioritise both practicality and environmental sustainability. We wanted products that are 100 per cent cotton, organic, plastic-free, vegan, and hypoallergenic, with a focus on minimising environmental impact through biodegradable and compostable materials. We wanted to create something positive that supports women, without a negative environmental impact.”

The rollout of these packs began in July 2024, and approximately three-quarters of the state’s vehicles have been equipped with packs to date. The full distribution is expected to be completed by the end of September.

Packs are being sent to district headquarters, where BASOs and DSOs will oversee their distribution to brigades, ensuring they are placed in each vehicle.

The packs will be stored in a location suited to each vehicle’s configuration, with the primary requirement being that they are easily accessible and known to potential users.

The initial rollout is fully funded by CFA incurring no cost to brigades. Arrangements for replenishment and restocking for both individual items and complete packs are being worked through. Further updates will be provided by the end October.

These packs are a significant step in supporting the wellbeing of women members, providing essential resources in challenging situations while aligning with environmentally sustainable practices.
