Hose swap and go: A game-changer for District 7 brigades

District 7’s Hose Swap and Go program is proving to be a resounding success - delivering faster hose replacement, boosting brigade readiness and reducing downtime.

 

Launched in December 2024, the Hose Swap and Go trial was designed to address a long-standing challenge: the delay in hose repairs that left brigades short on essential equipment. Instead of waiting for repairs, brigades can now simply swap damaged or unserviceable hose at the District 7 Headquarters for a fully tested, ready-to-use replacement. 

How It works 

The process is simple:

  1. Identify and tag damaged hose.
  2. Transport it to the D7 exchange point.
  3. Swap it for a serviceable hose.
  4. Return to service immediately. 

Each hose is marked with a unique serial number (USN) and a brigade identification band, ensuring traceability and accountability throughout the district. 

Early wins and growing participation 

Phase one of the trial began with six brigades. Phase two, launched in April 2025, expanded to nine more brigades including a brigade from every group. The goal is to eventually involve all the district's brigades. 

Brigades have reported significant improvements in operational readiness and reduced administrative burden. The system also promotes better hose turnover, preventing deterioration and extending service life. 

Maintenance made easy 

Brigades still handle basic hose care — washing, drying, and annual pressure testing.

The Hose Swap and Go Working Group is collecting feedback to refine the system. Brigade members are encouraged to share their experiences and suggestions. 

This program is more than a trial; it’s a testament to CFA’s commitment to innovation, efficiency, and frontline support.
