CFA helps with a Traditional Owner burn at Minimay

Barengi Gadjin Land Council (BGLC) with support from CFA and Greening Australia completed a cultural burn at the Bank of Australia reserve, Minimay, in the west of the state.

The burn builds on an already strong partnership between BGLC, CFA and Greening Australia and reflects CFA's commitment to support Traditional Owners undertaking cultural burning.

Ahead of what is forecast to be a dry summer, the burn was done to protect important Indigenous cultural heritage sites as well as promote native grasses.

The burn will protect the important heritage sites by reducing the amount of vegetation available to burn if a fire moves into the area. Reducing the amount of vegetation available to burn means subsequent fires will be slower and less intense.

Native grasses will be promoted by reducing competition for resources such as light and space and allowing native species to establish and flower in the burnt area.

The burn was carried out in August, when there is more moisture in the site to ensure a low intensity burn to both reduce fuel and protect native plants and animals.

The Traditional Owner burn is the first of a number of burns planned to be undertaken in District 17 ahead of the fire season.

If brigades are interested in undertaking or attending planned burns, you are encouraged to speak to your local Vegetation Management Officer who can be contacted via your District Office.
