Firefighting can be a highly strenuous physical task, and regular exercise can help increase strength and endurance for firefighters.

Whether you are an active firefighter or provide administrative support, exercise benefits our health and wellbeing in so many ways, including reducing the risk of chronic health conditions and pain and improving physical functioning for everyday life.

While exercise is important for everyone, the right type of exercise for one person will be different for another. Exercise Right Week is an annual campaign that aims to raise awareness around the benefits of exercise to your health and getting the right advice for your individual needs.

This year, Exercise Right Week runs from 23-30 May, and can be used as an opportunity to kickstart or rediscover the benefits of daily exercise and physical activity, with the help of accredited exercise professionals.

Exercise Right also has a range of resources and fact sheets, with topics ranging from women’s health to men’s health, and guidance on the right types of exercise for chronic diseases like arthritis, diabetes, chronic pain, osteoporosis, cancer and more.

You can learn more and get involved in an Exercise Right event or create your own event by visiting the Exercise Right Week website.

In addition, the Health Services team has recently created a new Physical Activity and Exercise learning module on the CFA Learning Hub. To find this module and more, visit the Health Services Page on Members Online under the ‘Key Online Resources’ section.

CFA’s Steptember Exercise Challenge will also be coming back in 2026 as a fun and collaborative way to continue or reintroduce exercise into your weekly routines. Look out for a Steptember Challenge Member News story in the coming months, or visit the Steptember page on Members Online.

Contact healthservices@cfa.vic.gov.au for more information about the resources available to you.
