CFA is recommending the creation of 14 new fire weather districts ahead of the 2027–28 high-risk weather season after a comprehensive review of our current district boundaries.
The fire weather district review, conducted during 2025, examined whether the existing district boundaries, which have been in place since 2009, are fit for purpose and whether they support the delivery of quality fire danger information to assist decision-making for agencies and communities.
“Significant advancements in technology have improved fuel and fire behavior modelling, enabling more localised and precise fire danger information to be available,” Deputy Chief Officer Alen Slijepcevic said.
Following the review, a series of proposed options were discussed with CFA, partner agencies, government departments, and industry stakeholders. As a result, CFA is now recommending the creation of 14 new fire weather districts for implementation ahead of the 2027–28 high-risk weather season.
“The new district boundaries reflect current and emerging weather and climate conditions and will ultimately provide more localised fire danger rating information for communities, industry, and those travelling within the districts,” DCO Slijepcevic said.
An important part of the project is developing names for each of the 14 fire weather districts. The names should be meaningful to local communities and easily understood by visitors and people travelling throughout the state.
Members and the community are encouraged to submit naming ideas by visiting the cfa.vic.gov.au/fireweatherreview.
Implementing these changes will require a coordinated effort, with CFA and partner agencies continuing to work together on the rollout approach. Additional information and community awareness campaigns will be developed ahead of the release of the new district boundaries.
