Changes are coming to the Working with Children Check
Keeping children and young people safe is everyone's responsibility.
The training is being introduced by the Victorian Government and will be integrated into the Working with Children Check application and renewal process. This is a separate requirement to CFA's Playing Your Part eLearning module, and will be completed online as part of the Victorian Government’s WWCC process.
These reforms are designed to strengthen safeguards for children and young people and build a consistent understanding of child safety responsibilities across Victoria.
For CFA members, this means that anyone applying for a new WWCC, renewing an existing WWCC or changing from a volunteer clearance to an employee clearance after 19 October 2026 will be required to complete the mandatory training before their application can be finalised.
CFA is currently working with the Social Services Regulator to better understand the changes. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
In the meantime, members who hold a WWCC that is due for renewal in the coming months, or who are likely to require a WWCC for a Schedule 1A role in the near future, may wish to consider applying or renewing before 19 October 2026.
Early action may help avoid delays during the transition period, given the new process will include mandatory child safety training, with the total application process expected to take approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
What should members do now?
- Check the expiry date of your current WWCC.
- Consider renewing before 19 October 2026 if your renewal is approaching.
- If you are likely to require a WWCC for a Schedule 1A role, consider applying before the changes commence.
- Ensure your contact details are up to date.
- Keep an eye out for further updates from CFA as we continue to work with the regulator on implementation arrangements.
For the latest information, including what the changes mean for CFA members, visit the WWCC Page on Members Online. Further updates will be published as implementation progresses.
