Wandong brigade visits Pretty Sally fire tower

On training night, Wandong Fire Brigade members visited the Pretty Sally fire tower to learn about the role of the fire tower and fire tower operators.

Fire towers playa crucial role in fire detection and prevention. The Pretty Sally fire tower sits within the Kilmore Gap between Wallan and Kilmore, positioned on a high vantage point. This provides a clear view of vast areas, allowing for early detection of fires.

Fire tower operators are responsible for continuously monitoring vast areas for signs of smoke or flames. Their primary duties include:

  • Surveillance: Scanning the horizon with binoculars and using topographical maps to identify and report potential smoke.

  • Communication: Relaying critical information to fire management teams and emergency services, ensuring swift deployment of firefighting resources.

  • Weather monitoring: Tracking weather conditions, such as wind direction, humidity, and temperature, which can influence fire behaviour and potential outbreaks.

  • Record keeping: Maintaining logs of observations, weather conditions, and fire incidents to assist in long-term fire prevention strategies.

Thanks to Alan for giving us a detailed run-down of the role of the fire tower, and to District 12 Commander Paul Brislin for obtaining the clearance to visit the tower.
