Torches seen in new light

From 16 March 2024, CFA will switch to using new LED lanterns instead of kerosene torches during torchlight processions.

The new LED lanterns have been custom built with an aluminum frame, which has been tested and refined over the past four years. These lanterns will be available on a loan basis for brigades participating in torchlight processions.

At the State Championships, the new lanterns will be loaned to brigades participating in the torchlight procession. These lanterns will be available for collection from the FEM Repair Shed at the event.

For other ceremonial events and processions, the LED-powered lanterns will be available to borrow for brigades who are participating in any torchlight procession or ceremonial activity. Brigades can book torches here.

For more information, please visit Members Online.

This change is part of CFA’s commitment to ensuring the health and safety of all members and the community, while recognising the historical importance of these lanterns and continued use of lanterns during ceremonial events.

Torchlight processions are a much-loved tradition in CFA which dates back to 1873, where as part of a demonstration of their firefighting skills by Victoria’s fire services, a torchlight procession was conducted through the streets of Melbourne.

These torchlight processions have since become an integral part of State Championships as well as local community events such as the Bendigo and Maldon Easter festivals and the Belgrave Lantern Festival.

However, based on international research that has determined kerosene can cause health issues and have an adverse effect on the environment, it has been decided that from 16 March 2024, kerosene torches will no longer be permitted for use and replaced by LED-powered lanterns.
