Staff profile: Meet Adrian Elves
Adrian Elves is a Program Designer in the Training Design and Development team.
What is your favourite aspect of working in your team?
As a Program Designer for CFA, my favourite aspect is the incredible collaboration and shared passion within the team. Everyone is deeply committed to enhancing the skills and safety of our firefighters, which creates a supportive and innovative environment. Whether brainstorming new ideas for training resources or refining existing materials, the collective energy and focus on making a real impact in the field make every project rewarding. It’s inspiring to work alongside people who genuinely care about empowering others and making communities safer.
What’s the most interesting project you've worked on at CFA?
One of the most interesting projects that I’ve recently worked on and still under development as a Program Designer for CFA was developing the SkillsPAK for CFAFEN Forcible Entry. It was a challenging yet rewarding experience to break down complex forcible entry techniques and strategies into engaging and accessible learning materials. Collaborating with subject matter experts, incorporating real-world scenarios and designing resources that could truly empower firefighters in critical situations made this project incredibly fulfilling. Knowing that this work directly contributes to the safety and effectiveness of CFA members is what made it stand out for me.
What is your background?
My background is a blend of military, security and education roles that have equipped me with diverse skills and experiences. I served as a sergeant in the Australian Army, where I was a Unit Supply Supervisor and a military instructor, honing my leadership and training abilities. Following this, I worked as a shift manager and recruit instructor for G4S at the Melbourne Custody Centre, focusing on team management and operational training.
Later, I became a trainer and assessor for G4S and Wilson Security, delivering training to both expats and PNG nationals at the PNG Offshore Processing Centre, supporting refugees and asylum seekers. More recently, I served as education manager and course area manager for Box Hill Institute, leading the Corrections Victoria Project to manage and deliver impactful education and training programs to prisoners. This diverse career has instilled a strong commitment to professional development and fostering learning environments that empower individuals.
What’s a hobby or interest you have that might surprise your colleagues?
I enjoy riding motorcycles, especially long rides on my 2007 Harley Davidson Softail.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I’d love to go back to Japan to explore more of its rich culture, beautiful landscapes and incredible food — there’s always something new to discover there. Malta is another favourite, with its stunning history and Mediterranean charm, so a return visit would be amazing. I’d also love to travel to England, Ireland and Scotland to dive into the history, picturesque scenery and vibrant culture of the UK. Finally, exploring the US is on my list to experience its diversity, iconic landmarks and unique regional flavours. Each destination offers a mix of adventure, culture and history that I find truly captivating.
If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be and what would you ask them?
If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be Jim Morrison, Freddie Mercury and the members of Metallica. I’d ask Jim Morrison about his poetic vision and how he channelled his thoughts into such timeless music. With Freddie Mercury, I’d delve into how he brought theatricality and innovation to rock, and his advice for staying true to one’s artistic identity. For Metallica, I’d explore their evolution as a band, their approach to crafting iconic riffs and how they’ve maintained their creative edge over decades. It would be an unforgettable night of music, creativity and raw passion for art.
What is one piece of advice you would give to someone new joining the team?
Stay curious and open to learning from everyone around you. As a program designer or program officer at CFA, collaboration is key, and the team is full of passionate individuals with a wealth of knowledge and experience. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, share your ideas and embrace the challenges—every project you work on directly contributes to the skills, safety and effectiveness of our firefighting community. Remember the impact of what we do extends far beyond the office, so take pride in being part of something that truly makes a difference.
If you could switch jobs with anyone in the world for a day, who would it be and why?
If I could switch jobs with anyone for a day, it would be Kirk Hammett from Metallica. Being one of the most iconic guitarists in rock history, stepping into his role would be an incredible opportunity to experience the thrill of creating and performing some of the most legendary riffs and solos in heavy metal. I’d love to feel the raw energy of playing to a massive crowd, collaborating with other musical legends and seeing firsthand how his creativity and passion shape the band’s sound. It would be a day of pure adrenaline and inspiration!
