Pullman Bay recently hosted the annual NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service Trainers Workshop, bringing together key firefighting and instructional experts from across the region.

Among the attendees were CFA ACFO Training Delivery Dave Maxwell, Volunteer Instructor Captain Tony Neville, and Career Instructor LFF Angus Rollinson, who joined representatives from NSW Fire & Rescue and Parks ACT for the two-day event.

The workshop focused on the commonalities between firefighting services and provided instructors with valuable insights into effective teaching techniques. Discussions covered strategies to keep students engaged, the importance of constructive feedback, and approaches to handling competency assessments. These tools aim to enhance training delivery and ensure that firefighters are prepared for real-world challenges.

A significant portion of the event was dedicated to the NWPS crew member training, which shares similarities with CFA’s General Firefighter program. Participants also explored the evolving role of artificial intelligence, including how Microsoft Copilot can help instructors to develop additional teaching resources and construct feedback, as well as the continuous advancements in online learning systems.

One of the most anticipated sessions included a presentation on NWPS’s new aviation simulator. Set to revolutionise training for aviation roles in firefighting, the simulator promises to enhance skill development and preparedness for aerial fire response operations.

The workshop underscored the importance of collaboration and innovation in firefighter training, ensuring that personnel across various agencies are equipped with the latest tools and techniques to better support our learners.
