A trial of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), or drones as they are commonly known, will examine how CFA's emergency response capabilities can be enhanced.

CFA Commander Aviation, John Katakouzinos, says incident controllers will be able to call for a drone response, in the same way they currently call for aircraft, to assist at an incident.

"This is some real exciting news for CFA," he said. "The drones will be based at Edithvale and Rowville brigades as well as (Burwood) Headquarters."

The trial will take place over 12 to 24 months to assess how drones can assist at structure fires, rescues, hazardous materials and other emergency incidents.
