Training profile: Karen Somerscales
Karen Somerscales
Meet Acting Policy and Doctrine Coordinator Karen Somerscales.
What is the most favourite aspect of working with your team members?
Having a common goal of providing robust doctrine and policies, within the framework, for all of our CFA members to be able to do the best they can in their role, whether employees or volunteers.
What was the most interesting or rewarding project you have been involved in whilst working at CFA?
The North East Region Smoke Alarm Installation project, aimed at some of our most vulnerable community members, elderly people, living in residential village type high density housing. I’m also a Corporate Peer in training, which is interesting as well.
List one (or more) things you can't live without, when at work.
Coffee and other team members.
Tell us about a hobby interest or achievement you have that might surprise your colleagues?
I am a black belt in Bushido Karate/ Mixed Martial Arts, which I achieved at the age of 51 after seven years.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I have visited 26 countries and have lived in South Africa and the UK, so I’d love to visit somewhere I’ve never been like Canada to do some hiking and see some bears (hopefully not while hiking).
What is your favourite way to unwind after a long day at work?
I go for my three kilometre walk while listening to a true crime podcast, then cook dinner for my family, occasionally with a glass of Sav Blanc in hand.
