Staff profile: Meet Sam Plater
This month's Training staff profile features Sam Plater, Manager for Learning and Development in the West region.
What is your favourite aspect of working in your team?
The people I work with, all members of the team from the CLD (Coordinator Learning & Development), ALD (Administrator learning and Development), Instructors (career and volunteer) all working together to develop, support and mentor our communities.
What’s the most interesting project you've worked on at the CFA?
Many different roles and projects over the past 20 years, I would say any work we do in L&D to enhance the flexible delivery of our courses to best suit the volunteers for example – three-day clustered General Firefighter (GFF) program, piloted successfully in District 16.
What’s your favourite way to unwind after a long day at work?
A movie night with my family - currently due to the age of my daughter the genre is sitting within Disney theme. It holds a nostalgic feeling and showing her the movies I watched as a child.
What is one piece of advice you would give to someone new joining the team?
Take the time and sit with members of your team to better understand the role they play and who they are as a person and to get out into the field, attend brigade/group meetings and hear the topics/conversation happening. This will equip you in understanding the organisation.
What is one thing you can't live without at work?
Who doesn’t love a cuppa, cup of tea – white with one thanks!
