Fast hose swap solution a hit in District 7
A trial of a new Hose Swap and Go System in District 7 is proving a great success - reducing downtime, boosting operational readiness and simplifying the hose maintenance process for local brigades.
The trial is testing whether a streamlined, centralised process for replacing damaged hoses can enhance operational efficiency and capability across the district.
Instead of waiting for repairs, brigades can now swap damaged or unserviceable hoses at District 7 Headquarters or designated exchange points for fully tested, ready-to-use replacements.
The initiative has been met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from participating brigades who are reporting faster turnaround times, improved access to reliable equipment and a noticeable reduction in administrative burden. The system also promotes better hose turnover, helping to prevent deterioration and extending service life.
Phase one of the trial began in December 2024 with six brigades – one from each group. In April 2025, the program expanded to include nine more brigades. Phase three is now underway, with a further eight brigades included in the trial – more than 50 per cent of the district.
District 7 District Business Manager Liz Calder said the trial responds to longstanding challenges around hose maintenance and turnaround times.
“With increasing operational demands, the need for reliable, ready-to-use equipment is more critical than ever,” Liz said.
“By centralising hose management, we minimise downtime from waiting for a hose to be repaired, ensuring brigades remain fully equipped and operational with minimal delays.
“We will eventually expand the trial to involve all brigades in the district to provide a broad understanding of how the process could work in practice in districts statewide.”
Geelong West brigade FEM Officer Harry Williams said the Hose Swap and Go system was incredibly simple and seamless to use.
“It’s a huge time-saver,” he said. “We just bring in the faulty hose and walk away with a ready-to-go replacement.
“We’re no longer chasing up repairs or waiting for hoses to come back - it all happens in one trip. No more multiple visits to district to collect fixed gear.
It’s really streamlined things behind the scenes and means our equipment is always reliable and ready when we need it.”
The trial will run through to May 2026. Following its conclusion, a post-trial evaluation will assess the system’s efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and logistical advantages and limitations, with the goal of expanding the service throughout District 7.
Feedback from participating brigades will play a key role in shaping the future of the service.
Testing, repair and maintenance of hoses
A SOP and associated Work Instructions are available to provide clear and correct guidance to brigades on the testing, repair and maintenance of hoses.
The Work Instructions include QR codes that link brigade members directly to supporting instructional videos.
There is an elearning module available on the Learning Hub for CFA members who undertake hose repair.
