Establishing training support requirements for new members through Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) activities

We are introducing Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) activities for new CFA members in line with the release of General Firefighter 2.0 (GFF).

LLN activities are a requirement for CFA as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). These activities are undertaken to make sure that all learners have the necessary language, literacy and numeracy skills to get the most out of their training and personal development.

Having our members undertake the LLN activities will help our instructors to better understand an individual member’s needs and ensure they receive the best possible support and resources to complete their training successfully. We would like to acknowledge VFBV through the Joint Training Committee for their support in endorsing the LLN as a critical initiative to support members through their training journey.

Who will complete the LLN activities?

Every new operational and non-operational member will complete the activities at the end of the volunteer recruitment process before they move onto their GFF training units or any other courses. The activities will automatically be included in the GFF 2.0 pathway as part of the member introduction.

Existing members are currently not required to complete the activities; however the modules are available to all members on the Learning Hub. We strongly encourage those who may require support to successfully complete training to participate.

How will members complete the LLN activities?

The three modules can be completed online through the Learning Hub.

A paper version will also be available for members through your district Learning and Development team for those who are not able to utilise the digital version.  Answers are not pass or fail, and all results are confidential.

The activities will take about 20 minutes to complete. It is recommended that members complete the LLN activities via a browser rather than a mobile phone as the reference documents will be hard to read.

We encourage members to take the time to complete the activities to the best of their ability so we can ensure that support plans are provided to those that need them.

It is planned that members will only need to complete the LLN activities once during their time at CFA, as the results will adequately cover future training requirements.

How will support plans be developed if they are needed?

District Learning and Development teams will manage these activities through the Learning Management System and where a support plan is required, they will work with the member and instructor to ensure that the plan will adequately support their learning needs.

Processes and information are currently being provided to regional Learning and Development teams to support them with undertaking these activities.

We would appreciate your support and encouragement in having members complete the LLN activities.
