Celebrating success: 2024 Captain Peer Mentor Program in District 6
Clyde Bassett, Timboon Fire Brigade
The 2024 Captain Peer Mentor Program (CPMP) in District 6 has once again proven to be an invaluable initiative, fostering leadership development, networking and personal growth among its participants.
This year, there was significant progress and positive outcomes for participants, with four mentor-mentee partnerships and two unmatched mentors contributing to the leadership group.
2024 marked the fifth year of the CPMP in District 6, with participants Clyde Bassett and Chris Lang honoured recently for their five years of dedication to the program, even though their contribution to mentoring members in the district has been ongoing for decades.
Building strong connections
One of the standout features of the CPMP is its ability to create meaningful connections between mentors and mentees. Participants have consistently highlighted the importance of shared backgrounds, trust and common goals in forming strong, effective partnerships. These relationships provide a robust support network for leaders within the CFA.
Leadership development and personal growth
The program's structure, which includes one-on-one partnerships and group workshops, addresses common challenges faced by captains and explores various leadership styles and strategies.
Workshops on topics such as the volunteer pathways and empowering teams have had particular impact, offering participants valuable insights into human behaviour and team dynamics. This holistic approach ensures that both mentors and mentees develop the skills necessary to lead effectively and confidently as captains and towards group and district leadership roles.
Feedback from this year's participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Mentees have expressed how the program made them feel recognised and honoured, boosting their confidence and commitment to leadership. Mentors, on the other hand, have appreciated the opportunity to refine their mentoring skills and contribute to the growth of new leaders, as well as enhancing the program's relevance and effectiveness, ensuring it continues to meet the evolving needs of its participants.
CPMP 2025
In the coming months we will be inviting prospective members to join the program in 2025. Whether you are a seasoned leader looking to further develop your existing skills or a new and an emerging leader eager to learn and grow, the CPMP offers a unique opportunity to develop your leadership skills, and expand your knowledge and network. The program supports leaders to empower themselves and members to create a positive and lasting impact within the CFA community.
