All CFA members, regardless of your role or experience, play a vital role in helping communities understand fire risk and take practical steps to stay safe.

To support this important work and Get Fire Ready preparations, an updated Member Quick Reference Guide, now named Community Engagement Guide, is available in hard copy and digital formats, with refreshed, practical advice to help members confidently engage with their communities.

It brings together clear guidance, consistent messaging and practical conversation tips to help members tailor their approach to different audiences and local contexts.

What's new and updated

Key improvements include:

• Clearer guidance on community engagement practice
  The guide outlines how to deliver effective engagement and how to support communities to take action.
• Conversation tips and prompts
  Practical advice helps members start conversations and offer simple, achievable steps to build preparedness.
• Consistent key messaging
  Updated key messages are based on evidence, research and behavioural insights, helping ensure consistent information is shared across the state.
• Plain English and accessible content
  Information is written in simple language and supported by resources designed to be inclusive and easy to understand for a wide range of audiences.
• Stronger links to programs, services and resources
  Members are guided to the Community Engagement Hub, Content Portal and Learning Hub for additional tools, resources and training.

Supporting members to build capability

The guide supports the Community Engagement training pathway, which includes 17 modules such as Introduction to Community Engagement and Communicating for Community Engagement.

It also highlights the importance of strong local connections, encouraging members to access local community networks and consider those who may need additional support.

Whether you’re planning a Get Fire Ready event, delivering a property advice visit or having a quick conversation at the station, the guide provides practical prompts that can be used in day-to-day engagement.

Accessing the guide

The updated Community Engagement Guide can be accessed alongside additional tools and resources via the Community Engagement Hub and Content Portal on Members Online.
