Ask. Listen. Support.

Today is R U OK? Day, a reminder that looking after each other is just as important as looking after ourselves.

At CFA, we are a community built on service, teamwork and connection. Whether you are a volunteer or staff member, taking the time to check in with someone can make a meaningful difference.

Recently, I had the privilege of welcoming our newest graduates to the Peer Support Program. These members have chosen to put service to others at the centre of their contribution, supporting fellow members and their families through difficult times and helping connect them with the support they need.

To me, this is one of the most meaningful forms of leadership and service there is.

I have often heard members reflect on some of the most difficult periods in their lives and careers. What stays with them is rarely a process or procedure, it is the person who took the time to check in, listen without judgement and genuinely care.

That simple act of connection can stay with someone long after the conversation has ended.

Sometimes a single conversation can change the trajectory of someone's recovery or even their willingness to seek further support.

That is why the message of R U OK? Day is so important.

A simple “Are you OK?” can help someone feel seen, heard and supported. You do not need to have all the answers. You do not need to fix the problem. Sometimes, simply listening and being present is enough to help someone take the next step.

I encourage every member of CFA to take a moment today to reach out to a colleague, teammate, friend or someone you know who might be doing it tough.

Ask how they are going. Listen to what they have to say. Check in again.

And remember, support is available.

The CFA Wellbeing Support Line, including the Member Assistance Program, Peer Support Program and Chaplaincy Program, is available to CFA volunteers, staff and their immediate family members 24 hours and day, seven days a week.

I encourage you to know what support is available to you and to make use of it when you need it. And with the fire season not too far away, it is important for all members to consider their mental health as part of their fire season preparations.

Looking after your wellbeing is not a sign of weakness. It is an important part of being able to look after yourself, your colleagues and the communities we serve.

We should also remember that this is not something we should do only on R U OK? Day. Looking out for each other needs to be part of who we are at CFA, every day.

We do not just respond when our communities need help. We look out for each other every day.

Strong communities are built through connection. Strong CFA teams are no different.

Ask. Listen. Support.

Take the time. Ask the question. Listen with care.

A conversation may not solve every problem, but it could be the first step towards support, recovery and hope.

And sometimes, one conversation really can change a life.
